Good Story from Turkey

Image may contain: 2 people, people sitting

This is a lovely story from the UNHCR Turkey team. This reinforces what I have been doing with my Family Link Up project. Family Link Up
I had put forward to the UNHCR legal team in London that we should create a database of CVs to see what skills and expertise where among the refugees to help host countries.  It is really quite a good exercise to sit with the refugees to build a CV not only have they done a lot before the war,  but when you perform a skills and experience analysis on the time of the war and fleeing... there is in fact a lot to add to the CV.  I did this with Dante in Turkey and could show how much he had done in the time he felt was dead space in his life.  Everything from first aid and rescue work, to unofficial social work, counselling one another, helping other refugees with hospital appointments, learning the host country language, creative writing and journalism..are some of his achievements - and include having a poem published in the Brunel University Literary Festival, writing reports that I have been able to present to our parliament too...
So love this story from the facebook newsfeed today.  Well done Khaled and the teams....

{Khaled worked as a pharmacist in Hama and Idlib provinces in Syria for 3-4 years before he decided to flee to Turkey in the beginning of 2016. He states that he sought refuge in Turkey as he was not able to bear the circumstances of the war anymore.Khaled did not begin the job hunting immediately, as he lacked Turkish language skills.
After hearing about the Turkish language courses and the livelihood trainings, he attended the transferrable skills courses including the CV writing workshop and the monitoring and evaluation training and certified Turkish courses offered by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in partnership with UNHCR with the funding received from the European Union (EU). Although Khaled underlines the significance of Turkish language skills for Syrian refugees residing in Turkey, he believes that in particular the CV writing workshop and M&E training have been immensely helpful for improving his chances of getting a job. He states:

“Following the trainings, I was able to write my CV in an accurate way. Now, I learnt to highlight my educational background and professional experience in a way to capture the attention of employers.”

After attending the trainings, Khaled entered in the non-profit sector by volunteering in DRC Turkiye برامج المجلس الدنماركي للاجئين في تركيا. Currently, he is employed by a different local NGO on a full-time basis, with a formal contract and social insurance, and he is happy with the salary he receives. Khaled would like to continue working in the humanitarian sector, yet his ultimate wish is to receive his undergraduate degree, and start working as a pharmacist.

“I am very happy with my new work but I do hope to return to my actual profession, I hope to be able to speak Turkish fluently and to become a pharmacist again.” He says with a smile:
“Anyone who gets work feels stronger.” And then, he adds: “And now maybe I can marry.”

This activity took place as part of the “Supporting the National Institutions in Turkey to Mitigate the Impact of Syrian Refugee Crisis” project. This project is co-financed by the European Union in Turkey and Turkey. It is coordinated by the Directorate General for Migration Management and implemented by UNHCR.

With the financial support from the EU, UNHCR and its partners are able to provide basic Turkish language courses, transferable skills and vocational trainings to the refugees in Turkey which enables them to pursue career opportunities in the local job markets.}

For each child that's born

Love this picture and song found today in Walk in Beauty facebook newsfeed.
For each child that's born
a morning star rises and sings
to the universe who we are
For each child that's born
a morning star rises and sings
to the universe who we are
For each child that's born
a morning star rises and sings
to the universe who we are
We are our grandmothers prayers
we are our grandfathers dreamings
we are the breath of the ancestors
we are the spirit of God
We are Mothers of courage
fathers of time
Daughters of dust
sons of great visions
we are sisters of mercy
brothers of love
lovers of life and the builders of nations
We're seekers of truth
and keepers of faith
makers of peace, wisdom of ages
We are our grandmothers prayers
and we are our grandfaters dreamings
we are the breath of the ancesters
we are the spirit of God
We are mothers of courage
fathers of time
we are daughters of dust
and sons of great vision
we are sisters of mercy
brothers of love
we're lovers of life and the builders of nations
we're seekers of truth and keepers of faith
makers of peace and the wisdom of ages
We are our grandmothers prayers
and we are our grandfathers dreamings
we are the breath of our ancestors we are the spirit of God
For each child that's born

Kitten Power

Kitten Power
Twisting, turning, jumping up high
A leap that makes us fly
A dance led from within
Putting target in a spin
A dance for our biological survival
No other species can rival
A gavotte in place through eons of time
Up high for better view we climb
Then crouch down with target in focus
This is no magic or hocus pocus
Hunters of our prey
A toy today
No one teaches us
No one shows us
But all our muscles and our joints
All our senses to target points
Flexible in all sorts of moves
Designed to make those moves
Designed to create this action
Our target not missed by any fraction
Helps the mouse to catch
That may come on our patch
Or the bird to hook with our claws
Sparrows or Jackdaws..
Now firmly held in our jaws
Its only weakness to fly close by
Twisting, turning, jumping up high
Stalking, pouncing, watching with keen eye
Energy driving from within
No time for tickles to our chin
Power to paws
Grip with strong claws
Power to eyes to see the moving target
Power to the ears to hear the moving target
Power to our whiskers to sense a sudden change in air
Then our prey is seen
Our reaction very keen
Jumping and pouncing down from chair
This time a toy
To play with gives us such joy.

Red Cross Shop some good gifts

There are some good gift ideas in the British Red Cross online shop.  I like the toys and games selection - they would be great for Family Link Up.
Family Link Up   this would be wonderful as I can help the Red Cross too... It is worth having a look at the full services the Red Cross do in towns and cities in the UK.  I like the idea of helping the elderly when they are discharged from hospital.  Also I think the project to support people who are lonely is a good caring initiative too!  Plus they offer support to refugees that are being resettled in the UK... take a look at the website and check out what the Red Cross does in your country too... I think you will be amazed and you can be a volunteer to help them too.

Working at home and how to help

Working from home as many advantages and the first is not to be out and about stuck in traffic jams to get into the office.  You can be surrounded by the things you love and have chance to have breaks when you feel like it. But sometimes it is crazy you can often work through the day with very little breaks if absorbed in the project you are working on.

I have found another good article in the Libelle dutch magazine... getting more and more impressed by the articles in this magazine.. going to be a regular subscriber for sure... https://www.libelle.nl/samen-met-libelle/tips-perfecte-thuiswerkplek/

Ok going to translate two tips that have drawn me too them..
 Go for green
Green is always a good idea, especially at your home workplace. Research shows that one plant already leads to higher productivity. And besides: plants purify the air, are good for health, improve acoustics and increase the sense of well-being.
 A lot of color
The majority of the offices are gray. In other words, boring and uninspiring. That is better! Each color has good qualities. Cool colors, such as shades of blue, are good for your concentration. Preferably choose a quiet base with an accent color. Do not only think of paint, but also the color of your furniture and accessories.

I also love the point of needing a printer and having a printer app that automatically re-orders new ink cartridge when getting low. www.hpinstantink.nl.

World visitors

Love blogging and always put a clustrmap into my blogs as it is fascinating where in the world people are visiting, for example today had visitors from Mexico and Moscow..... there is a good central library in Moscow where I get fairly frequent visitors... lool reminds me of a time when my daughter went to Moscow in Glasnost on a school trip.  Women will understand this that sometimes your underwire from your bra can work its way through the binding.  This happened to her in the middle of Moscow so the underwire appeared up through her jumper as if a radio antennae.... of all the places to be explaining NOT a James Bond spy from Whitehall.....hhhh.  Shame Russia is letting itself down in Syria with targeting children and not obeying International law of Article 51...and must be horrendous for the taxpayers losing so much money to weapons.  A Strong leader is one that gets round peace tables and certainly does not buddy up with other war criminals.... lets hope one day the despots in the world realise this and grow up... as Ben Ferencz the Nuremberg prosecutor states it is mans ultimate stupidity to think he can rule and problem solve with sledgehammer approaches of missiles.

Peace Salem Shalom Om Shanti hopefully will happen one day and we all be a Global family enjoying life together on this amazing planet home.

Dutch article on Sweet potato fries

https://www.libelle.nl/huis-tuin-feestje/zoete-aardappelfriet-vs-gewone-friet/
Some months ago I had some sweet potato fries with my Daughter in London... we had ordered a chicken burger and these fries in the little baskets..... I am hooked on them now.  In my search to expand on my Dutch reading and speaking I have a link up to Libelle magazine and found this article on a comparison of nutrition of ordinary potatoes and sweet potatoes.  I am learning Dutch to help me when I visit Boshra in the dutch speaking area of Belgium.
 Differences
The sweet potato and the regular potato do not seem to differ so much at all. For example, they both contain about the same amount of calories, carbohydrates and fiber. Of course there are differences: normal potatoes contain more iron, potassium and vitamin C, but also less sugar. Sweet potatoes, in turn, contain more fiber, calcium and vitamin A. The one can not be called healthier than the other.

Turkish gift to the Pope

Spotted this lovely story in my Twitter feed yesterday.  Love the idea of the Civilization clock and that each hour carries a message of Truth; Unity; Knowledge; Enlightenment; Intelligence; Wisdom; Humanity; Action; Justice; Morality; Civilization; Peace.
Well thought out Turkish Red Crescent.... love it... we should all have one on our mantle piece to remind us of our goals for mankind.

Oxfam report

Is the wealth bubble about to burst.
Image: “Poetography” by Khaled Youssef
The Oxfam report makes us feel that there really is a need for a complete change of global economy.  We really cannot go on with so many people in poverty yet trying their best to feed their families. While others luxuriate in their mega wealth... as if they live in some protected bubble.  But is that bubble about to burst.   I have just completed a 3 week online course on global migration and alongside war resulting in displaced people - the other fact is poverty.  The need to find somewhere to earn and build a good life.  But it would seem that for some no matter how they try they will always hit up against a barrier.  Kept suppressed by low wages and long hours for those wages, while others profit from the goods produced. The other issue highlighted is that there is so much money lost to tax evasion.  We really need money to circulate like the red blood cells in our bloodstream providing oxygen for all cells to be kept alive and well.  Money should circulate to ensure all citizens are kept well and respected with the ability to live their lives in peace, security and well-being. Every global citizen deserves financial dignity and surely this is what is needed for goods to be bought too. So it really does not make market sense surely to miss out on a large percentage of population not able to purchase the goods they need and the entrepreneur needs to sell.   Glad this was brought up by Oxfam in this week of the "elite" meet up in Davos.  To my reckoning there are no strong leaders in the world while there is so much inequality and poverty.  Poverty is diagnostic of failed leadership.  The most value asset any leader has is the people and they deserve their Maslow's hierarchy of needs met.
Eighty two percent of the wealth generated last year went to the richest one percent of the global population, while the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth, according to a new Oxfam report released today.  The report is being launched as political and business elites gather for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Reward Work, Not Wealth’ reveals how the global economy enables a wealthy elite to accumulate vast fortunes while hundreds of millions of people are struggling to survive on poverty pay.
  • Billionaire wealth has risen by an annual average of 13 percent since 2010 – six times faster than the wages of ordinary workers, which have risen by a yearly average of just 2 percent. The number of billionaires rose at an unprecedented rate of one every two days between March 2016 and March 2017.
  • It takes just four days for a CEO from one of the top five global fashion brands to earn what a Bangladeshi garment worker will earn in her lifetime. In the US, it takes slightly over one working day for a CEO to earn what an ordinary worker makes in a year.
  • It would cost $2.2 billion a year to increase the wages of all 2.5 million Vietnamese garment workers to a living wage. This is about a third of the amount paid out to wealthy shareholders by the top 5 companies in the garment sector in 2016.

Melting pot of languages

Always playing around with words in the languages that me and the refugees are exposed too now in Family Link Up.  English, Arabic, French, German, Dutch and Turkish.

NaTakallam

Looking forward to an evening with NaTakallam there is a meeting in London on Thursday 1st Feb. Brilliant idea of helping to get some earnings to Syrian refugees by them marketing one of their major assets - their mother tongue. So you can book for conversational Arabic online with refugees that are settled around the world in host countries.  Great way of getting them on their feet.

Delicate message

I love unravelling the Arabic script and finding the beauty in Dante's writing. This delicate message is so reflective of the times he has been in and continues to be in over the war, with losing so many friends, family and home. There is a fear of touching anything of beauty, of giving love to things and others for fear the pain comes again of losing. So symbolic of what I have been seeing and experiencing in his counselling, the layer upon layer of loss.  The pain of attachment and then gone..  So grateful for Family Link Up and the enrichment of the family I am linking that are scattered between Turkey and Europe.. Shamanic Wisdom

Image may contain: plant and outdoor
Found this in my newsfeed for Walk in Beauty
“In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: "When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” ~ Gabrielle Roth

Inspirational

Enjoyed two days training with the Red Cross in Wimbledon last week and was inspirational to see so many young men and women offering their time to help others.. So much love and care and commitment to do this too... Some as I talked with them were so dedicated to humanitarian work that they were studying for their Masters in this work too...

I was made aware of this service too and thought would share for you my readers to be aware of if this may help you and your families.
The Red Cross helps thousands of people following a short stay in hospital and prevents unnecessary hospital admissions by providing extra support and care at home.

Razen our Yorkshire Syrian Business woman

As a Yorkshire lass that is now helping Syrian Refugees with my Family Link Up project - I am & my Syrian family scattered between Turkey and Europe are well impressed and truly proud of Razen. Razen was settled in Yorkshire and as set up a Cheese making business with our Yorkshire dairy farmers....
You can read about her story on her website and order the cheese too... I have tried the cheese and it is yummy for sure.
This success story shows what amazing people we have among our refugee communities. So wonderful that they can throw down roots in the hosts communities and rebuild their lives, with this be a major asset to the local traders and businesses.  It is wonderful that Princess Anne has seen her worth too. I hope one day I can meet Razen I have spoken to her over the phone and she is such a lovely lady.
From her website
http://www.yorkshiredamacheese.co.uk/

“We came to the UK after the war in Syria in 2012. With my husband and three young children, we had lost almost everything and had to settle into a new life in Yorkshire. Initially I began searching for a job but despite having a pharmacy degree and a scientific background my lack of references and work history in the UK made it extremely difficult.
And read about Princess Anne's visit on the Royal website link too..

Razen has posted today on her facebook page a new venture of linking with the Leeds Food Assembly an order online and collect scheme. https://thefoodassembly.com/en  I hope my readers you will order and enjoy her cheeses.

Good review in the Cosmopolitan: Rose Facial Wash is listed in the 19 Holy Grail skincare products their Beauty editors love. Feeling the love.....I use mine every morning to wake up with the love of Rose Facial Wash
Neal’s Yard Remedies Rose Face Wash
“I like my cleanser to do just that, cleanse. I really don’t have the time or patience to triple cleanse my face every day with a balm, oil, and then a cream. I just want one product that does the whole job (preferably in less time than it takes to make a cup of tea). NYR Rose Face Wash does just that, removes all my makeup, including mascara, and leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean - with stripping it of all it’s moisture. Basic, but it works.” Victoria Jowett, Digital Beauty Editor

Claude Monet lived in his home at Giverny for forty-three years,from 1883 to 1926. During this very long time, he layed out the house to his own tastes, adapting it to the needs of his family and professional life.
At the beginning, the house called House of the Cider-Press (an apple-press located on the little square nearby gave its name to the quarter) was much smaller.

Browse in the library shop

I enjoy browsing in the British Library shop while I wait for my daughter to finish her meetings. Actually that winter tree is nice for most of the year in a corner somewhere... love the decorations... if you have been following the Family Link Up story the refugees in Turkey made their own Christmas tree...out of bits and pieces they could muster.  Christmas tree blossoming
In the British Library Shop I was enjoying the selection of cards they have on sale. Many would be lovely to frame for the wall... and was thinking too for Boshra in her Belgium home too..
