This book by Muhsin Al-Ramili is out in April of this year in the UK - I was given a copy at the Arabic evening in Waterstones Piccadilly London a few weeks ago... Muhsin is a very skillful writer... He takes you through darkness to light from hate to love, from horror to fun... in this page turner. It is based on Iraq and the wars. You will need a strong stomach for some of the writing but he balances it out with lighter views of the true man in kindness and as a community. With this work there is a view and question of how man can be driven to be sadistic despotic controllers of another. We see Iraqi soldiers conscripted and like many of our lads in the forces are crazy with leaving loved ones and have sadness for lovers that they leave behind... It also gives insight into the almost insect like colony layers upon layers of supporters round a despot... the closer they are to the core "King Bee" the more loyal they are..... But the so ready disposal of those that are not loyal or perceived to be against the leader in some paranoia or found out to be speaking against the regime the despot drives..... There are insights into cultural drivers and distorted beliefs. Very well written book with some very beautiful thought provoking description of scenes and events and human desire for peace and living together.
What strange tangled webs we make for one another when we try to have power over one another...
