Breathing harmonising cardiac rate


 I have been reading about the harmonisation of breathing to help harmonise cardiac rate too. It is to help gain control in times of stress and manage a stressful day. The technique is written about by Dr David O'Hare.  It is based on a daily routine 3- 6- 5 which is 3 times a day, 6 times per minute for 5 mins.  The point he is making is that there is a need to balance the activity of the nervous system which has two reactions... the sympathetic system which is the fright, fight and flight reaction to an actual or perceived danger or indeed anxious thought that triggers the reaction.  The effects will be to speed up respiratory rate and with this heart rate... a biological logic if in combat mode or run like hell out of danger mode! The opposite system is the parasympathetic nervous system that helps to moderate breathing and heart rate to slow and relax... So there is throughout the day and interplay of the two systems in our varying days stressors, coping and relaxation. 

My input on this topic: 
As a now retired midwife and someone that studied in India yoga techniques... it became apparent to me in my practice and my personal life... that if you are in panic mode and hyperventilating... there is need to control the outward breathe to trigger the parasympathetic system to slow down.

With the outward breath you can visualise letting go of the negativity or the pain you are experiencing.. In acute panic attacks to gain control it may need a puff puff blooooow style of short sharp puffs out and then a long outward breath. This emptying of the lungs then leads to the physics law of inward breath flowing in to equalise the pressure.... and this occurs without any effort.. so slowly but surely.....control and harmonisation is achieved.
